Letter to the Editor from Gary Emineth, Chairman of NDGOP

Letter submitted to Valley City Times Record*, Enderlin Independent, Litchville Bulletin and Ransom County Gazette, Monday October 27, 2008

Gary Emineth

As chairman of the North Dakota Republican Party, it has come to my attention that Senator Larry Robinson feels that a postcard we put out highlighting his record on property tax relief is a misrepresentation. If this assertion is to be considered true, then we need some straight talk.

In the interest of fairness, the same standard must be applied to Larry Robinson’s response ad which ran in papers across District 24. By this standard, Robinson’s ad presents four misrepresentations to voters.

Don’t take my word for it, judge for yourselves:

Robinson stated in his ad that citizens “received a flyer from my opponent Dwight Grotberg.” Anyone who has received this mailing will already know that this is not the truth as this piece was not sent out by Grotberg for Senate nor was it sent out by District 24 Republicans. Dwight Grotberg’s campaign was not responsible for the flyer.

Robinson asserts that this postcard “alleges that I did not support Property Tax relief in the 2007 session.” This is a second misrepresentation. The text of the flyer specifically addresses one bill and one bill alone, “HB 1051, 2007.”

The third misrepresentation Robinson is responsible for is the way in which he frames HB 1051 as a “defeated” bill without acknowledging his role in defeating it.

Finally, Robinson reports his “yea” vote on SB 2032 without revealing to you that he voted “no” on SB 2032 the first time it came to a vote.

The other concern is that Robinson still has not answered the question. Why didn’t he support Property Tax Relief bill HB 1051?  Perhaps the record shows that Robinson’s commitment to tax relief is shallow, which is precisely what our flyer was intended to demonstrate.

By all accounts, Dwight Grotberg has led an honest and positive campaign focused on his proactive approach to the issues. On November 4th, the decision is yours. I strongly urge you to vote for true commitment to Property Tax Relief by voting for Dwight Grotberg.

Gary Emineth, Chairman of the North Dakota Republican Party
